December was truly a magical month to be in the Czech Republic. For the first time, I was able to experience the typical Christmas magic that I had always contemplated in the movies during my childhood—full of snow, lights, and beautiful traditions. Spending a year in the Northern Hemisphere as someone who is used to warm summers during the holidays means becoming a child again and feeling the spirit of the celebrations in an unimaginable way!

Not only was the 25th day special, but the entire month of December was marked by the beauty of Czech traditions. Walking around the city, it was possible to appreciate the lights from the Christmas markets, which brought the community together every day and night, even during the coldest days. The air was constantly filled with the special scent of the trees, the typical seasonal food, candles, and other specialities. Whenever you were outside, you could hear melodies coming from the churches and the streets, from the various concerts and the famous Christmas carols.

Being away from your relatives during this time is hard, but it also offers an opportunity to bond with the people around you. Thanks to my host family and my friends, and their enthusiasm in showing me the best of Czech culture, I learned how to celebrate in a different way! Baking the famous “cukroví” became part of my routine, allowing me to enjoy the beauty of winter days as well.

Rotary also played an important role in making everything even better. After the invitation of my sponsor, the Rotary Club of Prostějov, I visited the Christmas markets in the town to see the efforts of the rotarians selling punč, which not only raises funds for the organization and supports their projects but also connects the members and promotes good relations in the club. Nevertheless, the highlight of the month was definitely our orientation meeting in Prague with all the exchange students! We visited the historical sites of the city, learned more about the celebrations in the country, and enjoyed ourselves while creating international friendships.

And most importantly, of course, Christmas Eve was unforgettable. For such a special day, being with my host family brought me the warm feeling of having a second home. Amidst good laughs and incredible moments, we had a great time opening presents under the tree, enjoying the signature dishes of the country, and spending some time outside in the snowy mountains of the Moravian region.

A Christmas that will stay forever in our memories and hearts.
