As a Brazilian student in exchange to Slovakia with the Rotary Youth Exchange Program, my life has been filled with new experiences and challenges. Eight months into my stay here, I have already encountered many exciting adventures, but the winter season has been particularly memorable. I discovered a new sport, skiing, and it has completely changed my perception of winter.

Never seen snow before coming to Slovakia

As someone who had never seen snow before coming to Slovakia, I was initially apprehensive about the cold weather. However, I quickly learned to embrace the winter season and all the fun that it brings. The landscape transforms into a winter movie scenario, with snow-covered mountains and frozen lakes. The snow-covered trees make for a view that is nothing like I have ever seen before.

One of the most exciting things I have experienced this winter is skiing. I had never tried this sport before, but I was eager to learn. Slovakia is known for its excellent ski resorts, and I was fortunate to have access to one close by.

The first time I tried skiing, I was quite nervous. However, I soon discovered that it was an exhilarating sport. The feeling of going down the mountain, surrounded by the beautiful scenery, was something that I will never forget. As I gained more confidence, I was able to try more challenging slopes and improve my skills. My host family provided me with this incredible experience, which took me along with them to the ski resorts in Orava and Čičmany. They taught me and encouraged me to learn the sport, with very funny terms for the movements, like pizza and spaghetti.

Other winter sports

Besides skiing, there are many other winter sports that I have enjoyed during my stay in Slovakia. Ice skating is another popular winter activity, and I have found it to be a fun way to spend time with friends.

Apart from the winter sports, I have also learned a lot about Slovakian culture during my stay here. The people are friendly and welcoming, and I have made many new friends. I have tried traditional Slovakian food, such as bryndzové halušky, which is a delicious potato dumpling dish with sheep cheese and bacon. I also visited some Slovak cultural attractions, such as the Čičmany decorated houses and went on cave expeditions.

In conclusion, my life in Slovakia as an exchange student has been full of new experiences and challenges. The winter season has been particularly memorable, and I have discovered a lot of things from my host country. The beautiful scenery and friendly people have made my stay here an unforgettable experience that I will cherish for the rest of my life.
